“Because you are fair and wise, King Balhen, and we trust that you will teach your children and the children of this kingdom your wisdom. We have searched the human world for one so deserving of our gift of power and found none save you. Our gift will enable you to to protect your kingdom and all those who seek shelter from you. And, when you shall wed, so long as your love is true, your Queen will multiply your power and you will be able to protect those in the whole wide world who are weak and in need – or, you will have the power to dominate and destroy them. We give you this power and ask in return that you use it to protect the entrances to the Otherworld and the sacred groves and rivers and work kindness among the creatures of your world.”

All across the land of Ghain
The power of the Dark Fairy manifests as pain.
The very soil weeps beneath the weight
Of the army of Milesian,
Drunk with power, spoils
and blood.
The king, Navan,
overwhelmed with sorrow sits
upon the throne
with nothing more now to do,
but to retreat and in so doing,
to live to fight another day.
 |
|
I sing to you now
Of the Defenders of Ghain,
Bearers of the Enchanted Spear of Evendalin.
The spear that strikes it’s target true,
Yet burdens not its rightful master.
The spear that will not break nor bend,
But lends to Ghain’s defenders strength and courage
In the face of doom.
Listen to my song,
This song of glory
For the Defenders of Ghain,
The last upon the tower walls
Who held fast with loyalty and strength
Against the most powerful Dark Fairy
Ever to cross into the world of men.

And now I sing the Bishop’s song
The story of Divon who long ago did save
The life of one Haraish, who did serve King Milesian,
Knowing even then that it would be
He who took the life of good Divon.
And in this act he earned the Bluest Eye,
A gift to see the future from the Three,
Who from up on high do weave the Fate,
Of all the men and beasts who live and breathe.

Pushed deep into their forest keep
King Navan and loyal knights did wait
Their opportunity to retake the land of Ghain and
Avenge the awful insult of Milesian.
For his part, Dark Fairy, Moldoch, too did pace
His fury rising with each dawn
That brought no news of capture of
The King and Queen of Ghain.
For what Moldoch so long and hard had schemed
was only this: to wrest from these the Golden Heart and
When the halves of Gold were joined
Together by his hand he’d gain
Dominion over all the world.
And Earth would bear his Darkness for all time.

Hear the song of twin knights Aeslin and Grimir of Ghain,
wearers of the Frijdae Armor,
Gifted to the Knights of old,
By Elvin Kings and Queens.
Passed down through lifetimes of men,
The armor warns the wearer of
Danger from the Otherworld.
Hail! Oh, Aeslin and Grimir of Ghain,
Brother and sister orphaned long ago by treachery,
Raised within the castle walls with King Navan
As their brother and dear friend.
The twins since birth have shared each others minds,
And any harm to one is felt also by the other.
Together they lead the forces of Navan and Maeve
Against the treacherous Milesian

|
|
But hear!
At sweet Waylin’s side did stand
A stranger who they called Umin.
He possessed great power to persuade
The rulers of each kingdom to choose peace
And grateful King Navan did trust him first among his friends,
But dear Queen Maeve of the Golden Heart
Silently did fear that Umin was not all he seemed to be.
Victorious, King Navan did invite Waylin
And her court to stay with him a while
For feasting and celebration of their hard won peace.

“Love the whole world, as a mother loves her only child.”
So the scriptures say
The good Queen Maeve did love the Prince
Her infant son, Rodain, as all the world
For in her heart she held
The magic to protect it all
If only Sweet Navan would hear her fears...

|
|
Oh, the shock and sorrow of the King
When he saw the thing that Aeslin held.
Immediately Navan did wail and cry out
Across the hall for his dead Queen.
He knew there was no other way
To possess the golden heart except by fairy murder.
He saw all clearly now,
The machinations of the Dark Fairy became distinct.
All he could do now was draw his weapon,
a special gift from the Elf people of old.
